Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the doctoral/licentiate student should be able to independently:

- identify, describe and compare academic writing strategies and their usefulness for systematic academic writing
- describe how strategic academic writing plans work
- understand the academic publication processes
Skills and abilities
- identify and formulate strategies and identify academic writing skills needed to reach academic publication and competitive grant applications
- use structured academic writing strategies related to a research project
- apply resources that support academic writing processes
Judgement and approach
- evaluate and critically assess academic writing strategies related to co-production, co-authorship, ethics and publication
- critically review and evaluate different types of academic writing strategies
- reflect on the needs for competence and skills of academic writing required within and outside academia.
Entry requirements
Admitted to studies at third-cycle level.
The forms of assessment of student performance
The course is examined by the PhD student individually, in writing, present reflections of different academic writing strategies and their pros and cons (5 credits).
Course contents
The course offers an orientation about academic writing strategies useful for work both within and outside of academia. The main aim of the course is to provide students with productive academic writing skills, both for individual and collaborative writing. The course builds on academic writing tasks related to the PhD students’ research projects, thus providing work-integrated learning by using authentic academic writing work experience as part of the course work.
The course consists of scheduled compulsory meetings, with planned individual activities between meetings (please see course assignment description). The teaching is conducted in the form of lectures, workshops, and group discussions
