Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student shall:
Show knowledge and understanding of physics of lasers including:
- atom-light interactions (absorption, emission and dispersion),
- optical saturation, population inversion,
- properties of lasers,
- principles of laser resonators and laser action (three and four level lasers, gain, threshold, laser cavities and modes), laser pulsing (Q-switching, mode-locking).
Have competence and skills in:
- selecting a suitable laser source for a specific application,
- keeping up with safety regulations related to laser utilization
Be able to:
- explain the laser operation principles relating it to atom and molecular physics,
- describe how a laser source is built and operates,
- give an account of technological issues behind laser construction,
- describe the main properties of the most common laser types (gas lasers, fiber lasers, solid-state lasers, semiconductor lasers),
- handle the most important safety issues related to laser utilization.
Entry requirements
Admitted to doctoral education in production technology.
The forms of assessment of student performance
- mandatory seminars
- written individual report and oral presentation
Re-examination of mandatory seminars is given by a written assignment.
Course contents
The course provides an introduction to the physics of lasers and gives an overview of the most important laser sources and safety regulations related to laser utilization.
