Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to show:
- knowledge of basic concepts in strength theory.
- ability to dimension structures loaded with uniaxial tensile/compressive force, transverse force, torque or bending moment, and combinations of these.
- ability to calculate structures subjected to axial compressive force with respect to instability.
- ability to perform fatigue calculations (stress fatigue).
- ability to calculate stress and strain conditions in a continuum.
- knowledge of plasticity theory.
Entry requirements
General entry requirements and approved result from the following course/courses:
MEK203-Mechanics or the equivalent.
The forms of assessment of student performance
Groupwise laboratory work, individual assignment, and individual written exam.
Course contents
Quantity, units, and dimensions. Uniaxial stress and strain analysis due to tensile/compressive force, transverse force, torque, bending moment, or combinations thereof. Euler's cracking case. Basic classic fatigue. The boiler formulas. Plasticity theory. Tension and elongation state in a continuum.
