Learning outcomes
The course aims to enable students to develop basic knowledge of global health and care sciences in relation to the ongoing work with UN sustainable developmental goals worldwide. The student will also develop competence to systematically evaluate and propose appropriate sustainable measures regarding current global health challenges.
The student should be able to independently, after completing the course:
Knowledge and understanding
- Define and explain the concept of global health and the main area of caring
- Describe human rights in relation to the global sustainability goals
- Describe how economic, socio-cultural and environmental determinants affect the conditions for people’s health in different context
Competence and skills
- Identify and critically discuss global health challenges based on global sustainability goals
- Identify and discuss lifestyle factors relation to health
- On the basis of a work-integrated learning, demonstrate the ability to elaborate upon and discuss selected global health challenges
Judgement and approach
- Demonstrate the ability to reflect and critically evaluate health inequalities and their consequences nationally and globally
- Reflect and describe on ethical dimensions of global health challenges in relation to human right perspectives
- Reflect on one´s own learning and demonstrate the ability to identify the need for additional knowledge within Global Health
Entry requirements
English course 6 in the Swedish upper secondary school or equivalent and 60 ECTS in subjects relevant to caring sciences or equivalent.
The forms of assessment of student performance
The course is examined through individual and group-based work presented at seminars with individual assessment as well as a written individual assignment.
Course contents
- Review and processing of definitions of concepts and theories in global health and care science is the content of the course.
- Descriptions of health determinants and their impact on the individual's health are processed.
- Use of scientific literature and other relevant resources/sources that describe the area of global health are included in the course.
- Sustainability goals have a central role and teaching and tasks are based on these.
- Human rights and unequal health are discussed and processed throughout the course.
- Processing of an optional subject in the area of health challenges is included in the course

Course language: The teaching is conducted in English.
Teaching methods of the course
The teaching methods of the course consist of independent course readings, utilization of resources for finding and assessing relevant literature, lectures, seminars, group exercises. The course also includes work-integrated learning in the form of field studies with a focus on global health challenges.
The course is web-based, but hybrid teaching may occur.
