Learning outcomes

After completion of the course, the student should be able to explain:

• basic principles of phase transformations in metals and alloys • diffusion-less and diffusion related phase transformations • the principles of thermodynamics of alloys and interpret different types of phase diagrams

Individual written exam.

Course contents

The course is an advanced course for phase transformations in metal alloys. In the course, you will learn about thermodynamics in alloys for both binary and ternary systems. The course also covers grain boundaries, structure and properties of grain boundaries, and interfaces between phases. Diffusion transformations in solids are also included in the course; nucleation and growth, TTT diagrams, aging, eutectoid transformations, CCT diagrams, etc. In contrast to diffusion transformations, diffusion-free transformations are also included. This includes the kinetics of martensite transformation, nucleation and growth, and crystallography. In addition, the course includes diffusion-related transformations, the general theory of nucleation and growth, and important transformation processes such as precipitation, spinodal transformation, etc.
