Learning outcomes
The purpose of this course is that the student will achieve in-depth knowledge on knowledge development process in international firms.
On finishing the course, the student should: Knowledge and understanding
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the process of knowledge development at different types of international firms in both home and host country environments including an overview of the field, insights into extant research, as well as specialized knowledge in certain areas of the field.
Competence and skills
2. Demonstrate an ability to critically interpret and analyse complex phenomena, issues and situations related to knowledge development in international firms in both home and host environments taking into consideration various social, environmental, and economic aspects. 3. Demonstrate the ability, through an informed choice and use of appropriate methods, to search, collect and critically assess data related to international firms’ knowledge development process in line with academic requirements for the content, language, and form. 4. Demonstrate an ability in speech and writing to report clearly and discuss his or her conclusions and the knowledge and arguments which they are based on by following academic requirements for the content, language, and form.
Judgement and approach
5. Demonstrate an ability to critically discuss relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues and situations related to international firms’ knowledge development process.
Entry requirements
Bachelor degree 180 ECTS with 90 ECTS in the major subject area of business administration and the course Firm Internationalization 7,5 HE credits, FIN500 or the equivalent.
The forms of assessment of student performance
The course is examined via one written assignment performed individually (learning outcomes 1, 2, 5) and one written assignment performed in small groups (learning outcomes 1–5) with individual presentations and opposition at seminars (learning outcomes 1, 2, 4, 5).

Course contents
The course addresses all phases of the knowledge development process in international firms, i.e., acquisition, integration and utilisation, and addresses the following:
- How different types of knowledge can be obtained in home and host country environments;
- Which learning mechanisms are available to international firms;
- How acquired knowledge should be integrated across home and host country environments to create competitive advantage;
- How knowledge possessed by internationalising firms can be used in their decision-making related to their international expansion.
