Learning outcomes

The purpose of the course is that the student will achieve deepened knowledge within business research methods. On completion of the course, the student will:

Knowledge and understanding

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding in business research methods;

2. Demonstrate specialized methodological knowledge in business administration and also demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work.

Competence and skills

3. Demonstrate an ability to integrate knowledge and analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations related to business research methods;

4. Demonstrate an ability to, through an informed choice and use of appropriate methods, search, collect and critically assess data;

5. Demonstrate an ability in speech and writing to report clearly and discuss his or her conclusions as well as the knowledge and arguments on which they are based following academic requirements and guidelines on contents, language and form.

Judgement and approach

6. Demonstrate an ability to critically discuss relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues related to business research methods in dialogue with other students;

7. Demonstrate an insight into the possibilities and limitations of research, its role in the society and responsibility of an individual for how it is used;

8. Demonstrate an ability to critically discuss complex phenomena, issues and situations which are of relevance to business research methods in dialogue with other students.

Entry requirements

Bachelor degree 180 ECTS with 90 ECTS in the major subject area of business administration and the courses International Marketing 7,5 HE credits, IMD900 and International Management 7,5 HE credits, IFD900 or equivalent.

The forms of assessment of student performance

The course is examined through assessment of written assignment(s) performed by two students together with individual presentations at seminars (learning outcomes 1-8). Detailed instructions, grading criteria, and the schedule for all assessment elements for regular examination and re-examination will be presented in the course description at the course introduction.

Course contents

The course covers all stages of a research process and addresses main key concepts in business research methods. The course deals with development of research questions, designing a research study, qualitative and quantitative research methods, critical review of scholarly literature, ethical and social aspects and sustainable development in in relation to business research. In the course, students develop knowledge of and skills in academic writing and in reviewing others' texts.
