Knowledge and understanding After taking the course, the student should be able to:
- Discuss terminology, theory and principles of thermal spraying.
- Describe different thermal spraying processes and related equipment.
- Describe characterisation and testing methods in thermal spraying.
- Categorise different thermal spray processes and feedstock materials tailored for specific coating applications.
Skills and abilities After taking the course, the student should be able to:
- Determine process parameters for a desired coating microstructure based on the fundamental mechanisms of coating formation.
- Summarise knowledge from scientific literature on thermal spraying.
- Analyse and select a suitable thermal spraying method for a desired application.
- Identify type of coating based on coating microstructure and other characterisation tools.
Entry requirements
General entry requirements and approved result from the following course/courses:
AMT601-Advanced Materials Science or the equivalent.
The forms of assessment of student performance
Individual written assignment. Individual laboratory report with peer review. Project report with an oral presentation in a group with peer review.
Course contents
The course consists of seminars and laboratory experiments in the research area of thermal spraying.
The course contents are:
- Introduction to surface engineering
- Principles of different types of thermal spray processes
- Fundamental mechanisms of coating formation
- Overview of equipment, feedstock materials, coating properties, coating characterisation and applications
- Study visit to a production facility
