Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student must:
Knowledge and understanding
- identify different forms of research writing, including short reports, popular science, and cutting-edge practice.
- describe work-integrated learning, vertically integrated projects, sustainability, and diversity
- demonstrate a basic understanding of methodology, data collection, data protection, multidisciplinarity, and research ethics.
- demonstrate understanding of methods within selected applied and practical research projects
Competence and skills
- demonstrate basic competence of how to work in teams and professional communication skills
- demonstrate basic awareness of diversity and sustainability issues and questions
- demonstrate the ability to use digital tools such as reference systems and relevant AI
- discuss principles of time and stress management
Judgement and approach
- demonstrate awareness of sustainability, diversity, and research development dynamics and issues
- reflect on their learning and its connection to future research work as a professional career.

The forms of assessment of student performance
- Written logbook with accompanying seminar participation
- Seminar with oral presentation
Course contents
The course provides an orientation in basic concepts and activities in research work. The aim is to prepare the participants to engage in research projects/research work as an assistant. The student will be introduced to the professional work of a researcher and will have an orientation in applied research work and associated activities.
The course covers a high level overview of research practice including themes like:
- data gathering methods, study design, data collection, research writing
- ethical considerations and data protection
- background concerns with sustainability and diversity in research.
Participants will also be exposed to cutting edge practice like:
- new scientific discoveries
- theoretical debates on research education
- vertically-integrated projects and work-integrated learning (WIL).
All this prepares the student for participation in a research project. Key to the research orientation course are seminars led by active researchers who introduce students to this content.

Course language: The teaching is conducted in English.
If a student has not demonstrated that they have attained the intended learning outcomes, but is close to doing so, the examiner can give them the opportunity to revise/supplement the first exam to meet the criteria for passing. Revising/supplementing an exam should be suited to the particular situation, based upon the intended learning outcome(s) that the student did not attain and should be submitted within two weeks after the student has been informed of the result and before the next time the exam is offered.
